Kisumu County Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) football games saw Agai and Kobala Mixed crowned new Nyanza Region champions.

Kisumu County’s Agai High School and Kobala Mixed Secondary School from Homa Bay stamped their authority on the Nyanza Region football scene after emerging champions in the boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively.

In a pulsating boys’ final held at Moi Stadium, Agai High School humbled Kisumu Boys High School 2-0 to clinch the prestigious regional title and dethrone defending champions Koderobara High School from Migori County.

Koderobara, who had dominated in previous seasons, failed to even make the regional finals after falling at the county level this year.

The girls’ football final was equally dramatic as Kobala Mixed Secondary School overcame archrivals Saye Girls in a nerve-wracking post-match penalty shootout. The win ensured Kobala dethroned Alara Girls, also from Homa Bay County, marking a shift of power among the region’s top teams.

The two schools will now proceed to the national championships in Kakamega, carrying with them the hopes of their counties and the region. Their successes were celebrated not only by their fans but also by regional sports officials who hailed the high standard of competition displayed in Kisumu.

Regional Football Power Shift as New Champions Rise

The emergence of Agai and Kobala Mixed as the new football giants underscores the dynamic nature of school sports in Nyanza.

While perennial contenders like Koderobara and Alara Girls have in the past dominated regional tournaments, this year’s finals proved that new contenders are ready to challenge the status quo.

Agai High School

Agai High School’s road to the title was paved by a series of commanding performances in the group stages and knockout rounds. Their victory over Kisumu Boys in the final was sealed by clinical finishing and resolute defending that frustrated their opponents.

The jubilant Agai players celebrated with their coaches and supporters as they lifted the trophy, fully aware that they had made history by dethroning the Migori giants.

Kobala Mixed Secondary School’s triumph in the girls’ category was equally hard-fought.

After battling to a stalemate in regulation time, Kobala kept their composure during penalties, ultimately sealing the win that eluded them in previous campaigns.

The victory was especially sweet for the school, whose players and staff have been knocking on the door of regional success for several years.

Nyanza Region Secondary School Sports Association (NRSSSA) vice chairman Ngala Mbuor commended the level of sportsmanship that prevailed throughout the football competition.

“We had very good games that were clean and without any major age cheats and complains. Our goal is clean sports, and I am happy with peace from Kisumu, we achieved our goal,” said the principal of St Patrick’s Segere Mixed Secondary School as per Standard.

Eyes on Kakamega Nationals

As the dust settles on the regional showdown, Agai High School and Kobala Mixed now turn their focus to the national stage in Kakamega next month.

The two teams are expected to carry forward the momentum they have built over the past weeks as they prepare to face Kenya’s best.

For Agai, the national championships offer a chance to prove that their regional dominance is no fluke, while Kobala Mixed will look to build on their historic win and possibly secure their first national title.

Coaches, players, and fans from both schools have expressed confidence that their teams will not just participate but compete for top honors.

The Nyanza Region’s football narrative has been rewritten, with Agai High School and Kobala Mixed Secondary School now standing tall as the new rulers of the pitch.
