Mary Moraa has opened up about why she chose to run the 400m at the African Games.

World 800m champion Mary Moraa has disclosed why she chose to run the 400m at the upcoming African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Moraa explained that running the 400m will help her get speed as she seeks to make an impact at the Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Last season, Moraa also began her World Championships campaign with the 400m race at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix where she noted that she was working to improve her speed.

Competing at the National Stadium in Gaborone last year, Moraa had a slow start out of the blocks but gained momentum as the race intensified and won the race, crossing the finish line first in a Personal Best (PB) time of 50.43.

She had an amazing season afterward, going unbeaten in the 800m until she closed her season with a fourth-place finish at the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting final.

“I want to improve my speed in the 800m so that’s why I chose to run the 400m race,” Moraa said in a post-race interview after the national trials.

She was in a class of her own during the two-day African Games national trials, winning the semifinal of the 400m in 51.47 and extending the winning streak to the final of the event in 51.25.

She now heads to the continental showpiece with the hope of giving her fans a treat, thanks to burning the midnight oil and practicing for long hours.

The Commonwealth Games champion has promised her fans a great show as she seeks to bag a gold medal and hopefully set a new national record.

“I’m ready to go and compete in Ghana and I’m ready to do anything…I’d like to tell my fans to expect something good from me and to wait for a national record,” she said.
