ATHLETICS University vice-chancellor on why Kipchoge was conferred with an honorary degree

Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology vice-chancellor, Professor Victoria Wambui Ngumi showered Eliud Kipchoge with praises as he was conferred his honorary degree, the Doctor of Humane Sciences.

Former world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge was showered with praise while being conferred with an honorary degree, the Doctor of Humane Sciences, by the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Speaking during JKUAT’s 41st graduation ceremony, the vice chancellor, Professor Victoria Wambui Ngumi showered Kipchoge with praise and explained his significance in the society.

She noted that Kipchoge has made a huge significance in the world of sports throughout his life, citing his exploits at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge where he ran 4.4 laps of the Hauptallee in 1:59:40, becoming the first man in recorded history to break the two-hour barrier over a marathon distance.

“He is a loyal and devoted family man, married to Grace Sugut and blessed with three children. Eliud acknowledges the vital role that his family played in his career. He refers to them as affectionately as his ignition key,” the vice chancellor added.

She also disclosed that Kipchoge is very curious and possesses an inquisitive and analytical mind, adding that he has a thirst for knowledge and is a ferocious reader of self-help books.

Prof. Ngumi also lauded Kipchoge for being a great contributor to the development of his former school, Kipsisiwa Secondary School among other achievements.

She was also in awe of Kipchoge’s glittering athletics career where the latter has been able to make a name for himself thanks to his hard work. She went down memory lane discussing Kipchoge’s career since 2002 when he made his debut on the international stage.

“He is also keen on environmental conservation issues…he has adapted 130 acres of land where he has planted different species of indigenous trees.

"In his unparalleled marathon career, Eliud has exhibited a high level of motivation. His sports consciously was fully awakened in 2002.

"He has racked up unprecedented victories in 10 out of 11 marathons. He has won nine successive victories over the 42km distance.

"He has built a legacy of one nation and one united world. He is not only a very special athlete but also a very special human being,” she said.

He added that Kipchoge possesses exemplary principles and a moral code of living that inspires the human race.

She cited his mantra of viewing achievements as a unifying experience since people of all races are united in celebrating a human feat.

“Eliud has helped many Kenyans to lead a better life by paying school fees, building schools, churches, and helping others to set up their businesses,” she said.
