Eliud Kipchoge and co. will be heading to the Tokyo Marathon to fight for top honours with the lucrative prize money also a priority.

The Tokyo Marathon, one of the most lucrative marathons, will be coming up on Sunday offering a huge prize purse for top performers.

Former world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge will be one of the many athletes in contention for top honours as he gears up for the Olympic Games in Paris, France.

According to the race organisers, the prize money will remain the same as last year. During last year’s edition of the event, about Ksh42 million was set aside for the top finishers.

The winners of the race, both male and female, received around Ksh10 million, meaning that winners of this year’s edition will also receive the same amount of money.

In case of a course record being broken, they will receive an additional amount of more than Ksh2 million.

Meanwhile, Kipchoge has won the race once and will be hunting for his second victory going up against a very formidable field including compatriot Vincent Kipkemboi who traumatized him during the 2023 Berlin Marathon.

For the first time in years, Kipchoge was seen running while looking behind in uncertainty as Kipkemboi, who was only debuting, worked very hard to close the gap. However, it was Kipchoge who won the race eventually.

Kipchoge also owns the course record of the marathon after clocking 2:02:40 at the 2021 edition while Brigid Kosgei possesses the course record of the women’s race. She clocked 2:16:02 to win the women’s race, also in 2021.
