Former Olympic champion Jutin Gatlinn has shed light on what Noah Lyles needs to do to break into the GOAT debate dominated by Usain Bolt.

Olympic champion Noah Lyles has been offered advice on how to stamp his mark in the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) debate alongside the likes of Usain Bolt.

Justin Gatlin, a former Olympic and World Champion himself, believes Lyles has the perfect setting in the 2025 campaign to stake his claim among track and field's greatest.

Lyles casts a divisive figure in such debates, with some believing the world champion is yet to earn that status, while others like Gatlin believe he is not far off the mark.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Ready Set Go Podcast, Gatlin shed light on how Lyles can put all doubters to rest and finally stake his claim alongside the likes of Bolt.

The former world champion believes if Lyles can repeat his 2023 World Championships feat in this year's edition in Tokyo, then he would be undoubtedly in the GOAT debate.

“Lyles broke Michael Johnson's American record in the 200, and he's won Olympic gold in the 100, which is not even his premier event, and he went on to win, um, world championship three-peats," said Gatlin, highlighting some of Lyles’ accomplishments that already make a strong case for him.

Most notably, he won the double at the 2023 World Championships, claiming victory in the 100m and 200m.

On top of that, he anchored Team USA to victory in the 4×100m, teaming up with the likes of Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley.

Gatlin believes if Lyles can repeat this feat in the 2025 edition in Tokyo, then he would undoubtedly be considered among the GOATs of track and field, a list unanimously topped by Jamaican great Usain Bolt.

Bolt amassed eight Olympic golds and 11 world titles while also setting the world records in the 100m and 200m at 9.58 seconds and 19.19 seconds, respectively.

"Now if he backs it up with a two three-peato then 100%, you know what I mean," said Gatlin, affirming Lyles' status.

A Crucial Season Ahead for Lyles

Gatlin, however, pointed out that a failure to do so will mean Lyles must up the ante in 2027 and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

"Now if he doesn't back it up and get gold in the 200 or the 4x1 and just the 100, then I think that his GOAT entrance is—how would you say—like the process has become elongated," said Gatlin

"And what I mean by that is, let's see what happens in 2027 and 2028 to be able to seal that deal for him and what he could win up to that point that would bring him into that GOAT category," he added.

"But do I think he's on par? Yes, because he has shown dominance across almost every category you think about."

Lyles will need to pick up the pace if he is to fulfill Gatlin's prediction. The American sprint king has had a lethargic start to his campaign, which has previously been derailed by injuries.

Lyles, who will hope to defend both his 100m and 200m titles in Tokyo in September, is yet to debut in two of his premier events.

While he had a successful season opener with the 60m dash at the New Balance Grand Prix, an ankle issue has sidelined Lyles recently, forcing him to miss the Atlanta City Games where he was expected to line up for the 150m dash.
