Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has supported a 20-year-old female athlete who was spotted running shirtless and without shoes at the Barngetuny Mountain Run this month

Sports CS Ababu Namwamba warmed the hearts of the residents of Cherondo, a village in Tinderet, Nandi County after paying a visit to 20-year-old athlete Milka Shikokoti Menjo and offering her support.

Menjo was captured running shirtless during the Tinderet Barngetuny Mountain Run this month and Namwamba was inspired by her passion for running despite lacking the right gear. Menjo braved the chilly morning, running shirtless on the tough terrains to earn something for herself.

Namwamba paid a visit to the athlete on Thursday, January 18 in the company of the area Member of Parliament Julius Melly. The CS was moved by the youngster’s bravery and due to that, he gifted Menjo and her husband full training kits complete with sports shoes. He went ahead and gave them Ksh200,000, and shopping.

During the visit, the CS said: "Milka's display was a true demonstration of resilience & determination from a young Kenyan determined to earn a living."

"Na kwa vile alijituma nasi pia tumeona tumshike mkono (and since she committed herself, we also thought it would be wise to support her)."

The CS reiterated that the government through the Ministry of Sports will continue to support the Barngetuny mountain run that gave the 20-year-old a platform to showcase her talents.

"We supported the mountain run and it was an incredible marathon. We have decided to turn this run into an international marathon because it is a unique and special marathon," said Namwamba.

"The Kenya Kwanza Government has brought new things that have never been seen before and one of those new things is #Talantahela, that has brought #PesaMfukoni to our talented youth,” he added.

On his part, Melly echoed the CS's sentiments on the impact of sports on talented Kenyans, lauding the ministry for the revolutionary Talanta Hela initiative.

"We want to thank you for the support you offered us for the Mountain Run and we have seen the impact of Talanta Hela," said the MP.

“Milka is indeed a testament that hard work is rewarded, and we have seen today that the Government is ready to come to the grassroots to support you if you show courage, determination, and hard work,” he said.
