Shericka Jackson has shared her reasons for letting go of wigs and competing with natural hair and a red butterfly accessory at the World Championships.

Shericka Jackson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah are not just known for their electrifying speed and dominance on the track, but also for their vibrant and bold sense of style.

A significant part of this expression, particularly, is their hair, and they have become famous for wearing wigs during major championships.

The use of wigs by these athletes is more than just a fashion statement, as it is a form of self-expression and a confidence booster.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, for instance, has often changed her hair colour and style for each major competition, with her wigs becoming as iconic as her ‘Pocket Rocket’ persona, and that was no exception at the 2025 edition of the World Athletics Championships, her final major championship.

However, for this year’s edition of the event, Shericka Jackson opted to compete with her natural hair, and she has revealed the major reasons behind that and why she placed butterflies on her hair.

The two-time world 200m champion bragged about having nice hair and felt the need to show it off, adding that the weather conditions in Tokyo, Japan could not allow her to have a wig on.

Shericka Jackson added that when she runs with wigs on, she is always distracted by the thought of whether the wig falls off.

She went down memory lane to a time when she was competing in Jamaica and had to hold onto her wig throughout the whole race.

“Guys, I have nice hair, and over here it’s hotter than in Jamaica. And if you have a wig on, then I will have to focus on trying not to let the wig fall back. One time, it almost happened in Jamaica. I was running while holding it like this (demonstrates),” Shericka Jackson said in an interview on the Inside Lane.

“I’m not running and holding no wig. So, I had to ensure that my hair was neatly kept from the 100m. I just brushed, put gel and catch the same thing. I didn’t change anything. That's why I don't have my two puff today because I couldn't bother.”

She added that she wore the red butterfly specifically for Scotia Bank, where she is the brand ambassador. She signed her first local corporate endorsement deal with Scotia Group on February 17, 2022, becoming the bank's first-ever brand ambassador.

The initial sponsorship was for three years and provided financial support for her athletic career. The contract was renewed for another three years on March 28, 2025.

“But I have my butterflies today. I wore my red butterflies because of Scotia Bank, because they're here. Big up Scotia always. Win, lose, and draw, they're always here. So I saw them today. So I wore my red butterflies for Scotia today,” Shericka Jackson added.

At the World Athletics Championships, Shericka Jackson finished fourth in the women’s 100m and claimed a bronze medal in the 200m. She hopes to win another medal in the women’s 4x100m relay.
