Sharon Lokedi opened up about feeling 'so stressed' during a tough training period in the U.S. before ultimately triumphing at the Boston Marathon.

Sharon Lokedi has opened up about how depressing it was training in the US for the Boston Marathon despite eventually being crowned the winner of the race after a hard-fought win against Hellen Obiri, the defending champion.

The 2022 New York City Marathon champion revealed that she had always been training in Kenya for most of her marathons, but changed things a bit ahead of the Boston Marathon.

Sharon Lokedi added that she conducted her full training for the Boston Marathon in the US, and the journey was not a walk in the park.

Sharon Lokedi revealed that it was during the winter season and the weather was unfavourable, something that forced her to almost withdraw.

The reigning New York City Half Marathon champion noted that she was not hitting the times she wanted to hit and second-guessed herself a lot of times before D-day.

The Kenyan distance sensation pointed out that she could see her rivals, including Hellen Obiri, hitting milestones in training and that lowered her confidence a lot.

“Most of my marathons I train in Kenya, but this was the second one that I trained here (in the US) because I did New York here, but this was like the first block that I did here fully. It was in the winter, and that was one of the biggest things, and I was unsure if I would endure all that,” Sharon Lokedi shared on a podcast with Citius Magazine.

“In January, I wasn’t sure if I could deal with it because it was cold and everything was hard, and I was trying to hit the paces, but it was difficult. Every day, I would just do the workouts, and my coach would be like I should put in the work and effort.

“It was just so hard for me because I was used to a certain training, and the weather was unforgiving…I knew it would be tough, but I had to find a way to work. I was so stressed and doing the long workouts by myself, and there was so much doubt and comparisons.”

Sharon Lokedi also noted that competing in the New York City Half Marathon helped her a lot and boosted her confidence a bit.

The day before the race, Sharon Lokedi revealed that she was a bit worried about how she would perform since every athlete looked healthy and strong and there were conversations that it would be a fast race.

Her coach, Stephen Haas, was a source of encouragement for her and boosted her confidence as she stepped on the starting line. Sharon Lokedi was also vocal about her mother, Rose Lokedi, who has been very supportive of her.

She would eventually win the race, crossing the finish line in a course record time of 2:17:22. Two-time champion Hellen Obiri finished second in 2:17:41 as Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw completed the podium in 2:18:06.
