In a post on her Facebook page, Mary Moraa penned a heartfelt congratulatory message to Hellen Obiri, banking on her to break the 2:11:00 barrier.

Reigning World 800m champion Mary Moraa has taken to her Facebook page to congratulate Hellen Obiri after her triumph at the New York City Marathon.

Obiri destroyed a strong field on Sunday evening to clinch the top prize as Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey and defending champion Sharon Lokedi finished second and third respectively.

Moraa has been known to be one of Obiri’s greatest cheerleaders and she never shies away from showering her with love. In the post, Moraa expressed confidence that Obiri has a bright future ahead of her when it comes to the 42km distance.

Obiri made her debut over the full marathon during last year’s edition of the New York City Marathon and finished sixth. She then proceeded to the Boston Marathon this year where she won before reigning supreme in the streets of New York City.

“My mentor, my role model. I feel this gallant and humble woman Hellen Obiri is set to redefine women's marathon sooner or later.

"Sub 2:11 is possible. A taste of the Big Apple marks the start of that journey. Congratulations my sister on the big victory at the New York City Marathon. From Gusii to the World,” Moraa said in the post.

Meanwhile, Moraa also dedicated her gold medal to Obiri. Moraa explained that Obiri has played a vital role in her career since she gifted Kisii Express her first spikes when she began her professional career.

Obiri also encouraged Moraa to switch from the 400m to the 800m where she is currently dominating.

“I want to single out Hellen Obiri who has been encouraging me to be consistent on the track as the person who ensured I clinched the gold.

"Obiri is my elder sister and mentor who always checks on me hence I am proud of her,” Moraa said at the time.
