Absa Bank Kenya has renewed its support for the 2025 Kip Keino Classic, which is set to feature top international and local athletes at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

The sixth edition of the Kip Keino Classic has received a massive financial boost of Ksh 40 million from Absa Bank Kenya.

The financial support will be invested directly in Athletics Kenya as rights fees and support the successful planning and execution of the 2025 edition of the Absa Kip Keino Classic showpiece.

Absa Bank had committed Ksh 60 million to support athletics events in the country, with Ksh 11 million being channelled to support the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country and the remaining amount to support other events.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, has attracted more than 80 international athletes, who will be fighting for global recognition and hopefully get a chance to walk away with the millions of prize money set aside.

The 2025 Absa Kip Keino Classic will be held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, having two categories of events, the core events, which are mandatory as per World Athletics and the national events, giving local athletes a chance to showcase their talents.

Speaking at the event, Absa Bank Kenya Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Mwihaki Wachira, emphasised the need to always support encouraging stories, especially from athletes, including Eliud Kipchoge, Ferdinand Omanyala and Faith Kipyegon, just to name a few.

She expressed her pride for Absa to be associated with Kenyan athletes, noting that sports are a unifying factor and have helped many businesses grow. She also urged other sponsors to join Absa on board and help grow sports in Kenya.

"It's been six years of partnerships with us, and we appreciate that you have chosen us as your partner of choice,” she said at a press conference held earlier today.

“We are delighted today to be renewing our commitment, and we have, in the last decade, given over Ksh 1.3 billion across our sports sector. We also want to recognise our athletes who have qualified for the World Championships in Tokyo and urge them to fly our flag high.

"This sponsorship is not only about the meet but also delivering value for the athletes and the whole ecosystem. We all feel immense pride when we see our athletes shine on the global stage. It is a world-class event, and this year alone, we have invested more than Ksh 60 million with Athletics Kenya.”

Speaking at the same time, meet director Barnaba Korir was proud to announce that more international athletes have shown interest in competing at the event than they did last year.

He insisted that such interest paints a picture of the significance of the event. Barnaba Korir further revealed that Kenya has always shown potential in hosting major events, from the World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and the World Under-20 Championships in 2021.

He revealed that world-leading times and records have always been shattered on Kenyan soil, and that will not be different at this year's edition of the Absa Kip Keino Classic.

"We have so many athletes who are interested in participating at the Kip Keino Classic despite the availability of many events worldwide,” Barnaba Korir shared.

“We have 89 athletes coming from different parts of the world and 23 from Kenya because we have different categories given to us."

Already, 189 athletes have been confirmed for the event, both in the core and national events. Of the 189 athletes, 53 are Kenyan athletes set to compete in the national events, with 31 athletes from Ethiopia.

Some of the stars who have confirmed participation at this year's Kip Keino Classic include Africa's fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, the 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallist Julius Yego, two-time world champion Anderson Peters, world indoor 60m silver medallist Lachlan Kennedy, and world under-20 800m champion Sarah Moraa, among others.
