Justin Gatlin defended Shericka Jackson's anchor leg role in Jamaica's relay team over replacing her with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
American sprint legend Justin Gatlin has defended Shericka Jackson following Jamaica’s relay performance at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China.
Shericka Jackson was the anchor in both the heats and the final, and Jamaican fans expressed their frustration, arguing that Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who was running in the second leg, should have been the one on the anchor leg.
In the heats, Jamaica’s women’s 4x100m relay team finished second behind Spain, qualifying for the World Championships and securing a slot in the final. In the final, Jamaica finished third behind Great Britain and Spain.

Justin Gatlin: It's About Balancing Energy
)
Speaking on the Ready Set Go podcast, the 2004 Olympic 100m champion revealed that as he was going through social media, he saw the comments and felt the need to educate track and field fans.
Justin Gatlin revealed that not much would have changed if Shericka Jackson had competed in the second leg because the same energy she gave on that anchor would have been transmitted to the leg she would have been assigned.
The former world 100m champion pointed out that Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce would have more work to catch up with either Great Britain or the US, or Spain, and they would have most likely performed poorer than they did.

Hii Imeenda? Pressure Increases As Gor Mahia Extend Winless Streak
Gor Mahia were held by a resilient Murang’a Seal side in a tense FKF Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon.
“I want people to understand it's about balancing energy, right, so the performance Shericka gave for that anchor, if you had flipped it over to her running the second leg, then you have to realise that Shelly-Ann would have a bigger deficit once she got the relay,” Justin Gatlin revealed.
“She would have to do more of a job to be able to run down the USA, Great Britain and Spain, which we both know as former athletes and coaches, is you know 10.10 don't catch 10.0.
“I saw a video, and it was of the females 4x1, and they were talking a little bit about Shericka, and they were saying, ‘Oh, they should have put Shelly on anchor leg.”

Ferdinand Omanyala: Athletics Is the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me
Despite the challenges of a demanding career in athletics, Ferdinand Omanyala has found purpose and fulfilment through his rapid rise.
Justin Gatlin added that in the relay, there has to be a form of structure, and the coach cannot keep changing athletes.
The retired American sprint icon further explained that the structure was done well, ensuring that Shericka Jackson got the baton in time and if she had been slow, then they would not have performed that poorly.
“I want people to understand, like fans and supporters, the way the relay is constructed is that you just can't plug and play athletes like you think you can and think that it's going to get the job done every time. It doesn't work that way,” Justin Gatlin shared.
“We both know from being a coach and an athlete that a certain time is not going to run down another certain time that's in that same bracket, right? So, the person who's trailing has to be of superior speed than the person that they're out there trying to catch.”
Justin Gatlin further emphasised the importance of allowing athletes to find their rhythm and get comfortable in their positions, noting that this approach would yield better results as the season progresses toward the World Championships.
He added that, from his experience being an elite athlete, one would often speak up if something did not feel right, and most of the time, athletes would choose the legs they wanted to run, asking fans to be calm and give the athletes time.
