Mary Moraa is all but out of contention for the Ksh13 million Grand Slam Track top prize after a second straight last place finish at the Miami edition of the event.

World 800m champion Mary Moraa’s poor outing at Grand Slam Track is far from over after a second straight nightmare performance.

Moraa had a bad start in Kingston, Jamaica last month when she finished last in 800m, before withdrawing from 1,500m due to a medical issue, and was hoping to make amends in Miami this weekend.

The Kenyan is signed up for the women’s Short Distance, which involves running both 800m and 1,500, and on Saturday, the group started with the 1,500m event.

Moraa stayed with the group for the first lap but surprisingly surged forward just after the 800m mark, a tactic that proved catastrophic for her.

Instead of finding the strength to push on, Moraa ran out of steam when her rivals, who have more experience in the race, put on the afterburners, as she was left struggling to finish the race.

Moraa finished last after clocking 4:24.44 in a race won by Ethiopian Freweyni Hailu (4:06.96) who was pushed to the finish line by American Nikki Hiltz (4:07.08) as another Ethiopian Diribe Welteji clocked 4:07.46 to complete the podium.

It leaves Hailu leading the women’s Short Distance with 12 points, followed by Hiltz with eight while Welteji has six with Moraa having managed just one point with her eighth-place finish.

That means Moraa is all but out of contention for the $100,000 (Ksh13 million) as she stands no chance of beating her rivals to the top prize even if she wins the 800m on Sunday.
