African champion Julius Yego has made a revelation as he penned a heartfelt message after bagging a silver medal at the African Games.

After a hard-fought battle to claim a silver medal at the African Games, 2015 World javelin champion Julius Yego has taken to his Facebook page to extend a hand of gratitude to his fans and also comment on the change of javelin in Africa.

Yego bagged a silver medal in the 13th edition of the event, throwing 81.74 to narrowly miss out on the Olympic qualification. Nigeria’s Chinecherem Nnamdi won the javelin after throwing a national record of 82.80.

Despite missing out on his main target, which was qualifying for the Olympics, Yego appreciated his fans who have supported him all through his injury woes and even as he seeks a comeback to the sport and claim the top honours one more time.

He was also grateful to his teammates who burned the midnight oil to ensure they performed well and brought medals back home.

“Thanks all for the wishes and support I don’t take it for granted, this will push me into new limits as we gear up for the season ahead and Olympics in Paris.

"Also, I want to thank my fellow athletes here in Accra who have done tremendously in their various events, it was a good show with promising results for all of us be it with a medal or not it was a good show,” Yego said.

The African champion also observed that the standard of the sport has changed since he last competed at the African Games. Yego was in action during the 2011 edition of the event in Maputo, Mozambique where he won the javelin.

“The competition I think since I competed in the All Africa games in 2011 in Maputo was the toughest!

“This shows that the level of competition is going up in Africa. Let’s now focus on the season ahead and train hard. Hongera #TeamKenya #AfricanGames2023,” he said.
