The 17-year-old will compete in the 200m event, but only in the Under-23 race rather than the open category and this decision has raised eyebrows. Gout has become a global sensation after some eye-catching and historic times in the 100m and 200m in recent months, but his favourite event is the 200m.

He'll take his talents to the global stage at the Diamond League event in Monaco, and is also slated to run the 200m at the world championships in Tokyo in September. But some are questioning whether Gout is being overly protected and too over-cautious, and the decision to run the Under-23 event in Monaco has fuelled that suggestion.

Gout is yet to run the 100m at open level, opting to keep running in age categories. He was also kept on ice for last weekend's World Athletics Relays event, which many thought he would enter to compete in the 4x100m race.

The general chain of thought is that Gout's team are trying to protect him from overdoing things at such a young age, and not wanting to risk injury or overexposure.

But American runner Williams has taken issue with that approach and believes Gout should be testing himself against the world's best since he will face a stacked field in Tokyo that will comprise Olympic champions Noah Lyles, Letsile Tebogo as well as Kishane Thompson.

Williams labelled it 'soft' that Gout is running the Under-23 event in Monaco, and said it would never happen with young American runners. "That’s really, really just soft," Williams said. “The kid is super talented, but that’s besides the point… the narrative now is he’s ducking these professional races."

"He’s clearly one of your top guys. He’s clearly the future of Australian track and field," Colin Waitzman, another American athlete added.

Gout Gout is tipped to break Usain Bolt's 100-meter and 200-meter records and has more than a decade to show his heroics. .
