Jamaica Athletics Association has settled on a key event that they hope to use to seal relay qualification to the World Championships after a poor outing last weekend.

Having watched in pain as a number of misfortunes cost them a place in the final and ultimately a ticket to the World Championships at the World Relays Championships in Guangzhou, China last weekend, the Jamaica Athletics Association (JAA) devised a Plan B.

Team Jamaica missed out on the men’s 4x100m, women’s 4x400m and the 4x400m mixed relay after poor performances with the former particularly painful to watch.

A men’s 4x100m relay team that Olympics 100m silver medalist Kishane Thompson and veteran Yohan Blake had a disaster when they missed out on the final following a poor baton exchange while in the repechage, an injury to Julian Forte during the race saw them exit in disappointing fashion.

It saw them miss a ticket to the World Championships via the World Relays but now, JAA want to use the Racers Grand Prix as a qualifier during the qualification window that runs up to August 24, 2025.

“That is a possibility and we are hopeful that once that is done, the organiser will be able to facilitate it in their programme,” JAA vice president Ian Forbes told the Jamaican Observer.

“We are hoping that if that can be facilitated, we will be able to at least get things rolling. We are open to all options, all suggestions, and I think that would be a prime opportunity to put something together there once the organiser can facilitate it.”

The Racers Grand Prix is scheduled for June 7 in Kingston with legendary coach Glen Mills, the meet director, ready to assist Team Jamaica.

“Whatever I can do to facilitate them, then we will,” said Mills, who is best known for being the coach of legendary sprinter Usain Bolt.

Jamaica is in a race against time as they need to post times that are in the top 16 by the end of the qualification window to seal their place at the World Championships and Forbes is keen to cut out the mistakes that proved costly in China.

“I think that there are some positives, but of course, there were some negatives as well in terms of the persons who made themselves available,” added Forbes.

“It was a little disappointing that we didn’t have more persons available, whether due to injuries, collegiate schedules, or timing close to the relays. We had misfortunes, technical issues with baton changes, and athletes picking up injuries both before and during the championships.”

This is the only available opportunity for Team Jamaica to right the wrongs of Guangzhou and JAA will hope that their star names have learned from their previous mistakes.
