Akani Simbine has described South Africa's dominant World Relays heat win as a comfortable race while praising his teammates' performance and potential.

Akani Simbine anchored South Africa’s men’s 4x100m relay team to a dominant win in their respective heat at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, on Saturday.

Team South Africa clocked a world-leading time of 37.84 seconds ahead of Team Germany and Kenya, who finished second and third, respectively.

The Jamaican quartet of Olympic 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson, Rohan Watson, Julian Forte and Yohan Blake failed to finish the race after dropping the baton.

Akani Simbine Reacts to World Relays Win in the Heats

The world indoor 60m bronze medallist has been impressive so far this season, and there was no doubt he would lead Team South Africa into the final.

Speaking to Flo Track after finishing the race, Akani Simbine revealed that he had no pressure once he received the baton and cruised nicely to the finish line.

He lauded the youngsters in the relay race, including double world under-20 champion Bayanda Walaza, for showing up and getting the job done.

“Yeah, man, it was a really comfortable race. The guys did the job, and I just had to get the baton and get through the race. Big up to the guys for making sure that the Baton actually gets to me,” Akani Simbine said.

“We have to win as a team, and I'm just happy that the team came together and ran well, and looking forward to tomorrow.”

The 31-year-old revealed that he usually has conversations with the youngsters before races, and they have greatly improved when it comes to handling pressure and showing up when it matters.

Akani Simbine revealed that it is great running with them and being like their mentor during important events like the World Athletics Relays.

He pointed out that they are proof that South Africa can also produce world-class sprinters and cannot wait to see them conquer the world stage.

“To keep calm and cool, and you know, just making sure that they are feeling this thing and keeping their confidence up, but you know, in a very cool demeanour,” Akani Simbine revealed.

“That’s what they're doing, and they're showing that they can do this and show they can handle pressure up here at the elite level.

“So I'm looking forward to seeing the growth. I'm looking forward to seeing them take over the world and show that South Africa is a sprinting nation as well.”

Akani Simbine Shares Secret to Great Season So Far

Akani Simbine has had a great season so far, and it all stems from within, revealing that he has taken a different mindset approach for 2025.

Simbine pointed out that he has embraced competition more and is content with where he is, treating his career as a fun thing to do since he is travelling across the globe.

“I think it's just a lot of happiness, and just a place of being content, you know. I think I'm very content right now with my running and my career and where it's at,” he added.

“I'm enjoying the sport, man, I'm enjoying being able to travel the world and see the world and just run. That's amazing to me.”

Akani Simbine started his season with a bronze medal win at the World Indoor Championships before kickstarting his outdoor season with a 100m win at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, setting a world-leading time of 9.90 seconds.

Akani Simbine would then win the 100m at the Diamond League Meetings in Xiamen and Suzhou before kickstarting the World Relays campaign.
