The Paris Olympics 4x100m silver medallist pointed out that he was unaware of the milestone he had achieved and only saw it on social media.

However, Akani Simbine is not resting on his laurels as he shifts focus to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The 31-year-old revealed that the main goal would be to post faster times and hopefully win a medal at the global championship.

“I actually didn’t know about that stat, I just found out on social media that I did that. It’s really exciting that it has been happening, and it’s showing what I’ve been doing and growing the sport,” Akani Simbine revealed in a pre-race press conference ahead of the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen.

“I came to the sport not knowing anything, and I had already been thrown into competing in the Diamond League and doing it every year it’s a great thing. However, this year I want to be consistent in the final and try to get a medal and be faster than 10 seconds.”

Akani Simbine added that winning the silver medal in the men’s 4x100m relay at the Paris Olympic Games was a life-changing moment for him and other South African sprinters.

He revealed that many youngsters have started believing in their craft and are showing up fearlessly. This year alone, South African youngsters have been impressive.

Bayanda Walaza and Karabo Letebele are some of the South African sprinters who have already started their 2025 seasons with scintillating performances.

“I think it’s a great thing in my career, but also an inspiration to the young sprinters in South Africa. We have younger guys greatly inspired by what we did last year and this year,” Akani Simbine revealed.

“Some South African sprinters have run so fast. What we did last year has fueled a fire in sprinters in South Africa, and I’m excited about the coming generation.

“Sprinting is not going to die or anything, it’s still going to live for a very long time and being part of that story is important.”

Akani Simbine has already started his 2025 season, competing indoors where he first won the bronze medal in the 60m at the World Indoor Championships.

He then claimed the win at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix and extended the winning streak to the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen. Akani Simbine will be looking to clinch another win in Shanghai on Saturday.
