Marco Arop has reignited his pursuit of David Rudisha’s 800m world record, aiming to challenge it alongside Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

Marco Arop has expressed his desire to join Emmanuel Wanyonyi in chasing David Rudisha’s world 800m record.

As the season started, Marco Arop had put a halt to his mission to attack the world record, but it seems like the Canadian middle-distance ace is back at it.

David Rudisha’s untouchable world record stands at 1:40.91, and the only athlete to come close to it in recent times was Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

Wanyonyi stunned the world with his scintillating run at the 2024 Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne, where he clocked 1:41.11.

Marco Arop is also not far from that since his personal best time over the distance stands at 1:41.20, a time he set at the Paris Olympic Games final.

The reigning world 800m champion revealed that since he started competing, he has always looked forward to breaking the world record.

He noted that he watched David Rudisha’s record-breaking race before competing in his first 800m in high school and has never looked back since then.

For Marco Arop, going under 1:40 is possible, and he only needs to get a few things right before attempting to break the record.

Marco Arop revealed that his team has been at the centre of the planning, and he hopes that when D-Day finally comes, he will be ready to make history.

"It's been a goal of mine since I started running. That was the first race I watched before I did my first high school 800," Arop told CBC Sports.

"Watching David Rudisha run that world record inspired me to get to that level. Now that I'm knocking on the door, it's really cool and a testament to all the work that's been put in.

“I've got to give a lot of credit to my coaches because without their belief, I don't think I would be near where I am now. To get to 1:39, that's going to be another level, so that's the next step."

Marco Arop has already shown signs of being in great 800m shape this season since he has been unbeaten so far in his two 800m races.

He competed in the first leg of the Grand Slam Track and battled to the finish line alongside rival Emmanuel Wanyonyi. His second victory was in the second leg of the Grand Slam Track.
