Marco Arop has shifted his focus from chasing David Rudisha’s world record to prioritising medals.

At a time like this last season, Marco Arop and his team were laying out a plan, ‘Project 99’, to focus on David Rudisha’s 800m world record.

The world record stands at 1:40.91 and was set by David Rudisha at the 2012 London Olympic Games and the only athlete to get near the record in recent memory is Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

The reigning Olympic 800m champion clocked an impressive 1:41.11 to win the Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne, just days after the Paris Olympic Games.

As things stand, Emmanuel Wanyonyi might just be the only one chasing world record glory since Marco Arop’s coach, Chris Woods, has noted that their focus has shifted to other accomplishments.

Marco Arop’s coach revealed that their main focus will be on winning medals rather than going for the world record.

He explained that for this season, Marco Arop has focus on defending his world title as he also pointed out that the LA 2028 Olympic Games are in sight especially after he lost the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games.

"Project 99 is a passion project for us. I don't want us to get so caught up in trying to break the world record that we lose sight of defending the world championship title, getting to L.A. in 2028 with intentions of winning it and redeeming ourselves from Paris,” Marco Arop’s coach said as per CBC Sport.

"Four years [of waiting] is a long time to get a hundredth of a second back. As long as we keep the main thing, Project 99 will take care of itself."

Chris Woods added that Marco Arop has adapted a new training routine that will be implemented until the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

He hailed the reigning world champion as a world-class athlete, pointing out that they will also focus on the 1500m, an area they have failed to tap into for a long time.

He added that the Grand Slam Track will help them realise that potential as he will be competing in the 800m and 1500m.

"He adapted well to running at an altitude between 6,600 and 7,000 feet. It'll be interesting if we can fit it in our training schedule prior to the LA Olympics," he shared.

"Some of the things he can do aerobically and anaerobically and still recover is impressive. He's a once-in-a-lifetime athlete."

"The 1,500 is a completely untapped skill set we don't necessarily have and now we get to sharpen those tools against the best in the world."

As they prepare for title defence at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, Marco Arop has already launched his season. He started off with a win in the 3000m at the 2025 Alumni Bulldog Relays.

Marco Arop was also in action at the first leg of the Grand Slam Track where he won the 800m and finished sixth in the 1500m.
