The County is planning to host the first-ever Roan Antelope Half Marathon.

Homa Bay County is planning to host the first Roan Antelope Half Marathon Event with the aim of conserving the rare Roan Antelope and marketing the County as an International Tourism Destination.

The Department of Trade, Industry, Tourism, Co-operative Development, and Marketing through the Directorate of Tourism will host the inaugural event on May 5 and 6. The venue of the event will be the Roan Antelope Sanctuary within Ruma National Park.

It was noted that Kenya has seen a huge decline in the number of roan antelopes which, incidentally, are Africa’s second largest antelope species and the county will use the event to also launch a recovery plan.

The marathon will comprise several build-up activities including tree planting within the park, Game Drive, hiking at the Gwasi Hills, cycling on the race track, Team building for corporates and departmental staff, and Cultural Exhibitions and Extravaganza.

There will be three race categories including the Half Marathon, Children’s 5km Race, and fun run. The course is set on dirt roads that take the runners on a 13-mile route through the park — across savannah plains, along river banks, over the escarpment and hilly ridges, and through acacia woodland.

The main event, on the second day, will be the launch of the Roan Antelope Conservation Initiative. The entry fee for the Half Marathon is Ksh1000, Ksh500 for kids, and Ksh50,000 for the fun run/Corporate category.

Upon completion of the race, winners will be awarded cash prizes and a certificate of participation.
