AK will be hoping to send a strong contingent of 50 athletes to the continental show later this month.

Athletics Kenya (AK) Nairobi region chairman Barnaba Korir has said the federation is ready to host the trials for Africa Under 18 and 20 Athletics Championships scheduled for Friday 7 and Saturday 8 April at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Korir said everything is set and they are confident of hosting successful trials. He added that they have set up the electronic timing machine.

“Everything is ready and we are hoping to host a successful event. We have set the electronic timing machine which will be used by World Athletics for data collection. This is one of the events that will be used as a ranking event,” he told KTN.

Korir is also bullish about the team to be selected for the continental event scheduled for April 29 to May 3 in Lusaka, Zambia.

The first edition of the championship was held in 2019 at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, in Ivory Coast where Kenya finished second overall behind South Africa.

They bagged a total of 44 medals (17 Gold, 16 Silver, and 11 Bronze). On the other hand, Kenya won the U18 title at the same championships.

Kenya emerged champions at the East and Central Africa Athletics Championships where they topped the medal table with 37 medals. Korir expressed optimism towards the athletes replicating the same performance.

“We want to retain our title in the under-18 category and win the under-20. We want to take a strong team of about 50 athletes and I know we shall perform well. We ruled in East Africa and we shall be keen to maintain the same momentum,” he said.
