American legend Carl Lewis has asked track and field enthusiasts to cut Noah Lyles some slack as he prepares to win four Olympic gold medals, something that does not sit well with some American coaches and athletes.

Track and field legend Carl Lewis has requested fans to grant triple world champion Noah Lyles some grace in this Olympic season as he looks to make an impact at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The two-time World 200m champion has plans to win four medals but his inclusion in the 4x400m men’s relay team at the World Indoor Championships seemed to bring up a lot of controversy from coaches and athletes including Fred Kerley who was not happy with the decision.

The American has proven to be in great shape and his recent feat saw him add another gold medal to his trophy cabinet by anchoring the US team to victory in the men's 4x100m at the World Athletics relays in Nassau.

This season, Lyles started with two silver medals at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow in February, firstly beaten by teammate Christian Coleman in the 60m and then as a controversial last-minute member of the 4x400m relay team.

"I hope that he ignores it and moves on. All Noah's doing is what you're asking. He's a good kid, he's going to do very well. I don't have a problem with someone saying 'I want to win another gold medal for America'.

"I don't want him to get bogged down by silliness. It really is silly. It's not fair. He doesn't deserve it, let him do his thing,” he said in an interview.

Meanwhile, Lewis, a nine-time Olympic champion also noted that it’s a bit difficult for Lyles to actualise the plans but he has time to actually work around that and do well.

"Trust me, it's hard enough to win three, period! It's really, really hard to do it. Let him focus on that. And if the relay pans out, that could be wonderful for the sport.

“Well, he's here and he should be. I think he understands it. He's running technically the best right now. That's why he's winning and he's doing a good job.

"I think the sport needs someone to be dominant... because the public like to attach to someone. When they win they're happy, when they lose they're sad. They want to go with the emotion of people. Right now, there's no emotion to it, it's just like, who's going to win,” he said.
