Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala is building up to the season nicely, clocking a new National Record in the 60m.

Africa's fastest man and 100m record holder, Ferdinand Omanyala, stormed to a new 60m Personal Best (PB) and Kenyan National Record of 6.55s to win the event at the Meeting D'Athletisime Mondeville in Northwestern France.

He held off Cote D'Ivoire's Arthur Cisse, who had a strong finish but could only settle for second in 6.59s.

Speaking with Kenya's Daily Star after kicking off his season five days ago at the Elite Indoor Track Miramas Meeting, the 27-year-old said he intended to break into the 6.60s mark in the indoor season.

"It was a great race. I achieved my target of running under 6.63s. My target for this indoor season is to run 6.5s. The reason I'm doing 60m races is to have a good 60m in the 100m and sharpen the block starts," he said.

Omanyala's 2023 goal is to win the World title in Budapest

Omanyala attaining his 6.5s target means he is Africa's joint second-fastest 60m runner this season, alongside Nigeria's youngster Favour Ashe. Cote D'Ivoire's Ismael Kone, a college student at Florida State University, has the fastest time with 6.51s.

The Kenyan had already declared his goal this season is to win the Diamond League and World 100m titles while breaking his African Record (AR) of 9.79s.

Last year, he defeated defending champion South Africa's Akani Simbine for the African title, and did same to win Kenya's first Commonwealth title in the 100m in sixty years. He is regarded as one of the best 100m runners in the world in the past two years.
