Zech Obiero Opens Up on How Transfer to Tranmere Rovers Has Transformed His Game
Harambee Stars midfielder Zech Obiero has broken his silence about his growth as a player, especially following his loan move to Tranmere Rovers.
Obiero ditched his boyhood club Leyton Orient for a loan spell at Tranmere Rovers in January 2026, leaving England’s third-tier League One for the country’s fourth division League Two, but he admits it was a sacrifice worth making.
The 21-year-old first signed for Orient when he was 14 after honing his skills at the Tottenham academy and had been at the club ever since, albeit with loan moves to Cheshunt and Chelmsford City in between.
However, Obiero’s growth was stagnating this season as he became a bit-part player at Orient, forcing him to move to get regular football and jumped at the opportunity to sign for Tranmere Rovers on a six-month loan deal.
Obiero, son of former Gor Mahia star Henry Obiero, is thrilled that he made the move as it has not only seen a shift in his playing position but also unleashed other qualities in him that had not been brought to the fore.
Obiero on Impact of Tranmere Rovers Transfer
“So important, you got to play games especially when you are younger, find what kind of player you are, what works for you and Tranmere has given me that and understand what kind player I am and playing at a higher role than which I did as a kid at Orient,” said Obiero, who is now playing in an advanced midfield role at his new club.
“I was playing a little deeper so it really did not help my pace but now playing higher in the No.10 role so I am allowed to score and give more assists,” added the midfielder, who provided a lovely assist to Ryan Ogam for Kenya’s equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Estonia on Friday.
The match against Estonia was the senior team debut for the England-born star and having had his first taste, he is now hungry for more as he looks to deliver success for coach Benni McCarthy.
“I want to play as high as possible and hopefully more caps for the national team and get as high as possible and step by step, remain humble and see where it takes me,” he said.
Since moving to Tranmere Rovers, Obiero has scored two goals in 10 games, having managed just one in 40 matches for Orient, a great turnaround, and there is hope that he will make the move permanent at the end of the season.
