Zech Obiero Gets Candid on Career Revival and Relegation Escape at Tranmere Rovers
Harambee Stars midfielder Zech Obiero has highlighted how his spell at English League Two side Tranmere Rovers has been a crucial step in his career.
Obiero joined Rovers in the midseason transfer window from League One side Leyton Orient where he had become a bit-part player with a desire for regular football.
He got just that, and a little more, as his spell at Rovers saw him become a key component of the team as they fought to avoid relegation and also earned a spot in the Harambee Stars squad.
Obiero played 13 games for Rovers and scored two goals, one of them voted Goal of the Month for March, and he admits the move is just what he needed at that point in his career.
“I am really enjoying it here. The fans are showing me a lot of love, a lot of support. The team, obviously, the boys are really good with me, the manager. I am really enjoying my time,” Obiero told Sky Sports.
Obiero Thankful to Rovers for Career Revival
“I came here to get minutes and show what I am about and hopefully continue to help the team with performances. I am very grateful for the platform that Tranmere has given me.”
Obiero missed the last three games for Rovers due to injury as they battled relegation before ultimately surviving on the final day when they drew 1-1 with Clarke Oduor’s Grimsby Town last Saturday but his contributions had not gone unnoticed with his coach Pete Wild lauding him.
“Even though I am on loan and have just come in for the back end of the season, it does not change how I feel about the club because, again, as I have said, they have given me the platform to show what I can do, so I need to pay them back with my performances and how I am on the pitch,” the playmaker further said.
“So, of course, it means a lot to me. Even for my career, no one wants relegation on their CV, so it is personal pride as well as the pride of the club, and of course, I am going to try my best and be out there and help the team.”
After achieving the goal of both saving Rovers from the drop and playing regularly, Obiero is now at a career crossroads as he has to return to his parent club Orient where there are no guarantees that things will change or decide to leave permanently in the summer transfer window.
