William Troost-Ekong: The defensive rock powering Nigeria's AFCON semifinal bid
Netherlands-born centre-back, William Troost-Ekong, has been a mainstay for Nigeria during their run to the AFCON 2023 semifinals in Ivory Coast.
As the Super Eagles prepare to meet rivals, South Africa, in a keenly anticipated clash, Troost-Ekong's performances at the AFCON provide continuity from the 2019 quarterfinal clash in Egypt.
Troost-Ekong’s AFCON stats
In 2019 against Bafana Bafana in the last eight, the then Udinese of Serie A defender, proved to be reliable as the Super Eagles booked a deserved semifinal date against eventual winners, Algeria.
With the game tied at 1-1, the then 25-year-old, towered above everyone else to score a late winner to break the hearts of South Africans.
It was a superb reward for a solid performance for Troost-Ekong, who was fouled four times - the most of any player. He posted one shot on target, one big chance created, four recoveries and won four of six attempted ground duels.

Five years on from that display, Troost-Ekong was at it again, this time against the Palancas Negras, at the same stage in Cote d'Ivoire, helping Nigeria seal a 16th semifinal appearance in 19 AFCON editions.
Troost-Ekong recorded one big chance created, won 100% of his attempted tackles, and seven clearances in addition to winning 100% of his aerial duels.
While his attacking stats were more prominent in 2019, Troost-Ekong has embraced a defensive general role this time around under the watchful guidance of Portuguese manager, Jose Peseiro.
His leadership and defensive strength as a centre-back give Nigeria a solid base to defeat South Africa again when they rekindle their intriguing rivalry on Wednesday.
