The 30-year-old winger, who spent last season on loan at Arsenal but struggled to make an impact, was once again deemed surplus to requirements by new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Several Premier League clubs, including Marco Silva’s Fulham, explored the possibility of signing Sterling, but his salary proved a major stumbling block.

The former Manchester City star earns €370,000 per week, making him Chelsea’s highest earner and one of the top five best-paid players in England, behind only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Casemiro.

With annual earnings approaching €19.4 million, most domestic suitors were put off before formal negotiations even began.

Revealed: Sterling Turned Kompany’s Call to Bayern

According to The Athletic, The Bundesliga giants saw Sterling as a short-term attacking option and reportedly held exploratory talks with Chelsea. However, Sterling declined the move for a combination of personal and professional reasons.

He was unwilling to relocate his family to Germany, even for a single season, and remained unconvinced about the guarantee of regular playing time under Kompany.

The financial package also posed significant challenges, with Bayern hesitant to match his existing Chelsea wages.

Ultimately, Bayern pivoted to pursue Nicolas Jackson, leaving Sterling’s future unresolved.

What Next For Sterling?

The rejection leaves Sterling in limbo at Stamford Bridge, where he faces the prospect of limited opportunities under Maresca. Unless a January exit materialises, the winger may spend the season on the fringes, despite being one of the club’s top earners.

Sterling, once regarded as one of England’s brightest attacking stars, now finds himself battling to salvage his career after underwhelming stints at both Arsenal and Chelsea.
