‘We’ve gone past that era’ - Aiyegbeni claims Siasia or Eguavoen should not coach the Super Eagles anymore
Nigeria have had issues in the past with appointing coaches to lead the Super Eagles team for major tournaments.
During the 2026 FIFA World Cup and AFCON qualifiers, Nigeria appointed four different coaches, with each having a positive and negative impact on the team.
The qualifying series for the AFCON saw Jose Peseiro begin as the team's coach before Finidi George took charge. George was then succeeded by Eguavoen, who successfully qualified the team for the tournament and handed the role to Eric Chelle.
Aiyegbeni speaks on Super Eagles coaching issue
Yakubu has had his say on the coaching debate, suggesting that while a foreign coach is still needed, a change before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations might be too disruptive.
Speaking on a podcast, he mentioned, "Why do we always find it difficult to get a decisive coach when it matters?
“We say we need a foreign coach, and I agree, we still need a foreign coach," he said. "It’s too close to bring in another coach.
“I don’t think Sia Sia or Eguavoen are needed anymore. We’ve gone past that era. I think we should try to sit together and look for whom to bring. It’s time to move forward, not backwards."
As it stands, Chelle remain the head coach of the Super Eagles and will likely lead the team to the AFCON tournament in December.
