‘We Must Work on Mentality!’ - Kariobangi Sharks Coach Frustrated to Just Draw With AFC Leopards
Kariobangi Sharks assistant coach Edwin Seda expressed disappointment following their 1-1 draw against AFC Leopards, pinpointing defensive lapses as the main reason the team missed out on all three points.
The Sharks had taken an early lead through youngster Humphrey Aroko in the eighth minute, but a late lapse in concentration allowed Leopards to claw back and level the match through Victor Omune.
Speaking to Azam TV after the game, a visibly frustrated Seda, who is standing in for William Muluya that is away in Ethiopia coaching the Junior Stars at the ongoing CECAFA AFCON U17 qualifiers.
“Some slight defensive lapses cost us all the three points,” Seda said. “The goal we conceded was because we dropped too deep defending that corner. If we had pushed higher, maybe that ball would have sailed wider.”
His comments underline how critical maintaining defensive discipline has been for the Sharks, especially in tight matches like this one.
Seda also shed light on the decision to substitute Aroko after the forward suffered some discomfort during the game.
“To some level, it affected us because his ball retention was allowing us to release our three number 10s. When he dropped deeper, he would pull defenders out of position and efficiently create space for the playmakers, but subbing him off made us less of a threat in terms of our link-up play.” Aroko’s influence off the ball was clearly key to Sharks’ attacking fluidity, and his absence forced the team to adjust their tactics mid-game.
We Must Improve Our Mental Fortitude
Despite the draw, the Sharks assistant coach praised the players for their tactical discipline but acknowledged the need for improvement in closing out matches.
“Tactically, the boys tried to do their best, but we must learn to see out the games we are leading. It is about our mentality because everyone must understand we are not in a good position and must do our best to improve.”
This call for a stronger mentality highlights the challenges Kariobangi Sharks face as they aim to climb the Kenyan Premier League standings.
The result leaves Kariobangi Sharks with a valuable point but also with plenty to reflect on as they continue their campaign.
Meanwhile, AFC Leopards, who extended their winless streak to three games, remain third on the table, with the pressure mounting ahead of their crucial Mashemeji Derby clash against league leaders Gor Mahia.
