‘We don’t need that’ - Mikel Obi outlines possible action Ekong should have taken as captain after Iwobi's viral video
The controversy was started when Iwobi posted a silent video clip online, showing the condition of the Rive Hotel in Rabat, Morocco.
The footage rapidly gained traction, leading to an outcry among fans who questioned the NFF's dedication to the well-being of the players.
However, Iwobi later clarified that his intention in sharing the video was not to criticise either the hotel or the football authorities.
Mikel Obi on Iwobi’s action
Mikel asserted that if he had been the team's captain, he would have demanded the video's immediate removal to prevent any distractions.
"If I was the captain, I would tell him to take that down straight away. Take it off your Instagram, take it down, we don’t need that," he said, emphasising the need for focus. "Whether it was frustration or not, don’t put it up on social media."
The former captain stressed that the team's energy should have been entirely directed toward securing positive results on the pitch.
"You should be concentrating on the games ahead, trying to find a way to win those games because those are the most important things you should be thinking about," he said on his Obi One Podcast.
Despite a victory over Gabon in their first match, the Super Eagles ultimately failed to secure an intercontinental playoff spot after a decisive loss to DR Congo.
