Victor Wanyama Features in 8-Goal Thriller as Man United Beat Southampton in Anniversary Clash
Victor Wanyama was among a host of legendary players from Southampton who hosted Manchester United at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday in a special anniversary match.
The friendly fixture commemorates the 50th anniversary of the historic 1976 FA Cup final. In that memorable game, Southampton, then a Second Division side, secured a stunning 1-0 upset over a heavily favoured Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.
The decisive, and somewhat controversial, late goal was scored by Bobby Stokes, sealing what remains the Saints' only major trophy and their most celebrated victory.

The match began at a relatively slow pace at St Mary’s, with little goalmouth action in the early stages. In the ninth minute, Rickie Lambert showed good determination to keep a long ball alive inside the United box, though it did not result in a clear chance.
Two minutes later, Southampton threatened again as Lambert delivered a dangerous cross towards Lee Barnard, but Phil Bardsley reacted quickly to clear before Raimond van der Gouw confidently collected the corner.
Manchester United Legends started to find their rhythm in the 12th minute, with Wes Brown showing neat footwork before Antonio Valencia burst down the flank and picked out Louis Saha, whose effort was blocked.
Despite United’s growing influence, it was Southampton who broke the deadlock in the 13th minute. Andrew Surman delivered from the left, and Barnard got ahead of his marker to steer the ball home and give the hosts the lead.
Manchester United looked to respond in the 17th minute through Valencia, but Southampton’s defence held firm, with Victor Wanyama in the mix. In the 20th minute, Darron Gibson tested the goalkeeper with a long-range effort, while moments later, Saha suffered an injury as he attempted to shoot.
By the 22nd minute, Saha had been replaced by Fraizer Campbell, who joined Dimitar Berbatov in attack. United came close to equalising in the 25th minute when Valencia released Bardsley on the overlap, but his looping cross struck the base of the post.
Controversy followed in the 27th minute when Valencia was brought down in the box by Svensson, who also appeared to handle the ball, but the referee waved away strong penalty appeals, leaving United frustrated.
The game then slowed down in the 30th minute, with fewer chances being created, although Van der Gouw had to be alert to rush out and stop a dangerous Southampton attack.
The match continued with the same momentum, and as the first half neared its end, Manchester United Legends continued to rely on Antonio Valencia, who remained their main attacking threat.
In the 38th minute, he tried to pick out Fraizer Campbell, but the move broke down, with United also struggling to bring Dimitar Berbatov into the game.
Southampton responded in the 40th minute through Lee Barnard, who set up a chance for Pele, though his effort was easily handled by Raimond van der Gouw.

Manchester United Legends made a strong start to the second half and took the lead in the 49th minute. Danny Webber produced a brilliant run to beat two defenders before forcing a save from the goalkeeper, with Fraizer Campbell reacting quickest to tap in the rebound and make it 2-1.

The pressure eventually eased in the 61st minute, as the Saints drew level. Substitute McQueen delivered a teasing cross from the left that narrowly evaded Jos Hooiveld before Lambert reacted quickest to tap home and make it 2-2, setting up a tense contest on the south coast.

Southampton drew level again in the 70th minute. Rickie Lambert was once more the creator, slipping a clever pass through before Lee Barnard cleverly let it run for Jos Hooiveld.
The return ball was squared back into the box, allowing Barnard to slot home into an empty net for his second of the match and make it 3-3 with 20 minutes remaining.
In the 74th minute, a series of Southampton substitutions disrupted the rhythm of the game, with veterans Glenn Cockerill and Ken Monkou among those introduced, slowing the momentum of the second half.
A minute later, in the 75th minute, Victor Wanyama came close to putting Southampton ahead again but curled his effort just wide of the far post, missing a big chance to make it 4-3.
Manchester United Legends struck what could be the decisive goal in the 82nd minute, as Bojan Djordjic’s lofted pass caught Southampton’s defence out completely.
Fraizer Campbell raced onto it and unselfishly squared for Danny Webber, who took a touch before blasting home from close range to put United 4-3 up.
Manchester United Legends then sealed the victory in the 90th minute with a late breakaway goal to make it 5-3. Darron Gibson, inside the box, fired home his second goal of the match to put the result beyond doubt.
