Ryan Ogam’s high-profile move from Tusker FC to Wolfsberger AC last year proved difficult, as he struggled to secure regular playing time with the senior squad and was eventually relegated to the reserve side.

Despite these setbacks, the forward remained resilient, and his perseverance paid off when he earned a call-up to the Harambee Stars squad for the FIFA Series, where he made an immediate impact.

In Kenya’s clash against Estonia, Ryan Ogam scored the team’s only goal in a 1-1 draw, forcing the match into a penalty shootout. Harambee Stars ultimately fell short, losing 5-4 on penalties, but Ogam’s performance stood out as a positive sign of his resurgence.

Ryan Ogam: I Have Restored My Morale and Confidence

Ryan Ogam noted that he was satisfied with his overall display, particularly his impact after the break. He explained that he had focused on executing the coach’s directives, emphasising quicker ball circulation and sharper movement, which he felt played a key role in his goal.

The former Tusker FC striker added that, in his view, the team delivered a strong performance overall, even though the result in the penalty shootout did not go their way, describing it as an unfortunate outcome rather than a reflection of their effort.

Ryan Ogam further noted that the main improvement came from a noticeable increase in intensity and intent, pointing out that while the tactical approach had already been solid, the players were encouraged to show greater drive and commitment.

According to him, that added determination significantly elevated the team’s performance and made a clear difference on the pitch.

“I think I played a good game especially in the second half. I tried to follow the instructions and move the ball quickly, and I think that is what has contributed to my scoring. I believe it has been a good game, the penalty was hard luck,” Ryan Ogam told the Kenyan Sports Guy.

“The difference was just playing with more energy and playing with a purpose because the tactics were right, but we were told to play with passion and that made a huge difference.”

Ryan Ogam also noted that finding the back of the net for the national team once again was deeply fulfilling, noting that the moment meant a lot to him after a challenging period.

He revealed that the past six months had tested him significantly, but the goal had lifted his spirits and boosted his confidence ahead of upcoming assignments with both the national side and his club.

Ryan Ogam also expressed gratitude despite the team not securing the desired result, adding that he remained thankful for the opportunity and the experience.

Ogam emphasised that consistency in preparation had been key for him, explaining that even during difficult phases, he stayed focused and patient, believing that circumstances could improve at any time.

He further pointed out that he had continued working hard behind the scenes while waiting for an opportunity, and when it finally came, he was determined to make the most of it.

According to him, being entrusted with a chance by Benni McCarthy motivated him to deliver, and he was pleased to have justified that faith with his performance.

“It’s a great feeling scoring for the national team again, I thank God. The last six months have been very difficult, and I feel good because this gives me the morale and confidence ahead of the national team games and club games,” he added.

“I thank God. Though we haven’t achieved the outcome we wanted, all in all, I’m grateful. It’s all about preparation because even during the hard times, you have to stay grounded because the situation can change. I have been preparing, hoping one day the chance will come, and the coach gave me a chance, and I have repaid that loyalty.”
