Tusker Coach Charles Okere Blasts 'Amateur' Own Goal in Loss to Gor Mahia
Tusker head coach Charles Okere expressed his disappointment after his side fell 1–0 to Gor Mahia in a tightly contested FKF Premier League match decided by a defensive mishap.
The Brewers conceded in the seventh minute when Collins Odhiambo’s back pass toward goalkeeper Brian Opondo was poorly controlled, allowing the ball to trickle over the line for a costly own goal.
Speaking after the match, Okere did not mince his words regarding the mistake that separated the two sides.
“We lost a game we had prepared for well, but it was a mistake between our goalkeeper and right-back,” Okere told the media afterward.
“It is unacceptable to have conceded a goal like that because we had worked on it in training. We must address it for future games.”
Despite the early setback, Tusker grew into the match and created several promising opportunities.
Denis Oalo, Cliff Oruko, and Vincent Owino had shots that tested the Gor Mahia goalkeeper, but the Brewers lacked the sharpness and composure needed to find an equaliser.
Okere acknowledged the effort but stressed the urgent need for improvement in the attacking department.
“We are creating chances but not clinical in front of goal enough. We must find that cohesion upfront. There is work to do in that department and also work on conceding less.”
The loss adds pressure on Tusker, who have now suffered back-to-back defeats after previously enjoying a strong run of form. Before losing to Kenya Police and Gor Mahia, the Brewers had gone six matches unbeaten, a streak that had kept them firmly in the title conversation.
What Next For Tusker?
Okere insists the team must regain momentum quickly if they are to remain contenders in an increasingly competitive league.
“Consistency is important. We lost against Police and Gor Mahia. We had gone six games unbeaten before that.
“We have to redeem ourselves quickly if we want to win the title because the league is getting more difficult. We cannot afford to drop more points.”
Tusker will now look to regroup and correct the defensive and attacking lapses that cost them at Kasarani as they prepare for their next league assignment.
