Suarez reveals how he chose Barcelona over Real Madrid after biting incident
Barcelona legend Luis Suarez has revealed that he came close to joining the Blaugrana’s arch-rivals Real Madrid.
The 37-year-old is in the twilight of his illustrious career. He has confirmed that his current team, Inter Miami, where he is teammates with Lionel Messi, will be his final club before calling time on his career.
Suarez is one of the greatest strikers in football history, and his time at Barcelona shot him into that stratosphere. However, his career could have gone differently, as Real Madrid courted him first.
What Suarez said
The Uruguayan football legend revealed that Los Blancos approached him to prise him away from Liverpool in 2014.
Suarez claims the record Champions League winners contemplated selling eventual club legend Karim Benzema to Arsenal to make space for him.
However, events of the 2014 World Cup earned him interest from the other Spanish giants, while causing Los Merengues to backpedal.
“My agent spoke with Real Madrid, and everything was on the right track," Suarez recounted, per Marca.
"They were thinking about selling Benzema to Arsenal, everything was already done."
His performance in the tournament attracted Barcelona, and the infamous biting incident, in which Suarez sunk his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in a fit of anger, saw Madrid soften their stance.
“When the World Cup started, Barcelona came into the race, and obviously I preferred Barcelona," he said.
"With the situation of the bite, Madrid lost interest, and Barcelona became more interested. In the end, I had both options and I chose Barcelona because it was my dream."
