From Football Manager to Sporting Lagos, ex -Barcelona & Roma coach joins NPFL side as Academy coach

Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, side, Sporting Lagos has made an important addition to the club ahead of their first-ever season in the top flight.

Sporting Lagos have made changes in their Academy setup following the appointment of Shola Adegun as the new manager. 

The club took to their social media account to share the news that Shola has joined the club. 

“We’re thrilled to announce Shola Adegun as the Coach of Sporting Lagos Football Academy,” the club stated in a statement. 

The seasoned youth coach arrives at the Noisy Lagosians with quite a resume. 

He started his coaching journey at OAU, the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife having impressed his classmates with his knowledge of the game from Football Manager and FIFA. 

Adegun took his coaching to the next level when he joined Clique Sports Academy, Abuja, in 2014 after an Advanced Certificate in Football Coaching at the National Institute for Sports, NIS. 

He later joined the Barcelona Academy in Lagos as a youth coach where he moved to AS Roma Academy in Abuja as a technical director. 

Before he transferred to Sporting Lagos, Adegun was with the Mees Palace Academy, Jos, with whom he led to the final of the LALIGA/NPFL Under-15 Promises in 2023. 

Speaking on his appointment, the UEFA C Licence holder noted that he is at the club to help create a sustainable footballing ecosystem. 

“We’re playing a vital role in developing a sustainable footballing ecosystem in Nigeria and I’m delighted to be a part of this project,” Shola told the club website. 

“The Club’s identity of recruiting and developing elite talent is something I'm proud,” he added.
