The West Africans defeated Sudan 4-2 on penalties yesterday in Kampala after a tense 1-1 draw in regular time.

The clash brought out contrasting football philosophies — Sudan’s disciplined defensive shape against Senegal’s aggressive 4-3-3 high-pressing approach.

Early in the game, the Lions fell behind when Mohamed Tia Asad struck from a corner in the sixth minute.

Despite the setback, Senegal refused to lose momentum. They maintained fluid transitions and targeted the flanks, testing Sudan’s compact backline.

Their persistence paid off just before the hour mark when Seyni Mbaye connected with Ousseynou Seck’s precise cross to level the score.

The contest remained open until the final whistle. Sudan could have stolen victory with eight minutes to go, but Maaz Koko squandered a clear chance in front of goal.

With no breakthrough in regulation time, the outcome was decided from the penalty spot, where Senegal held their nerve.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Senegalese Football Federation for the trust placed in me since the beginning of the preparations. It was not easy at first, but today I believe the team’s performance deserves recognition,” Diallo said in his post-match reaction.

Preparation and Technique

In the shootout, Senegal converted through Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cisse, and Libasse Gueye.

Sudan’s Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen faltered, sealing a 4-2 win for the Teranga Lions. For Diallo, the victory was about more than composure — it was a reflection of deliberate training.

“Regarding the penalty shootout, the coach emphasized the team’s preparation and technique: ‘It is important for players to understand that penalties are not just about luck. It’s about technique, training, and strategy. Our players showed they were ready, and that was decisive in winning the penalty series.’”

Diallo’s emphasis on discipline in high-pressure moments highlights his tactical philosophy. Unlike many who dismiss shootouts as a lottery, the coach underscored that preparation can tilt the odds in a team’s favor.

Bronze as Consolation

This bronze medal also served as a consolation for Senegal, who had narrowly lost their semifinal clash against Morocco 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The win further cemented the Lions’ growing reputation in African football.

Diallo’s offensive strategy — high pressing, wing play, and quick transitions — stood out as a marker of Senegal’s ambition to blend traditional strength with modern tactical dynamism.
