Sasha Mutai gets temporary reprieve as KRU AGM meant to discuss his conduct is adjourned

Besieged Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Sasha Mutai will wait a little longer to learn his fate after an Annual General Meeting was adjourned for 30 more days.

Mutai has been forced to seek legal redress after he was suspended by the union on March 6 over a number of reasons, a move he claimed was illegal.

A letter sent by KRU secretary Roy Olendo on the said date claimed that Mutai had been unanimously suspended by the KRU board over a number of issues, pending a governance review at the union’s AGM on March 24, 2025.

However, Mutai fought back through his legal representatives, saying the board meeting that allegedly suspended him had been constituted illegally while giving Olendo three days to reverse the decision, failure to which he would institute legal proceedings.

He lived up to his promise when he filed a petition at the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) and through chair Njeri Onyango, orders were given halting the suspension and that the board should not remove him from office until a case he filed is heard and determined.

The case was scheduled for mention on March 19 where the parties were told to try and solve their issues through mediation, with former Tribunal chairman John Ohaga overseeing the process and report back on April 2.

SDT also stayed the order of not removing Mutai from office, until the process is complete, and as they headed for the AGM on Monday, the sticky issue was off the table and mediation given a chance.

With Mutai’s suspension the key agenda at the AGM, the meeting was adjourned for 30 days to allow for the process but it does not mean that the beleaguered KRU chairman is off the hook as his removal could still happen at the next sitting.

There exists bad blood within the KRU board which will be hard to solve through mediation but there is hope that a solution will be reached for the good of the game although some people will likely be forced out at the next meeting.
