Rivers United maintain lead in Group B, Lobi, Abia Warriors secure late winners
Defending champions Rivers United maintained their grip at the top of Group B as the fifth round of matches in the 2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) were played on Wednesday.
For troubled Rangers, it was an end to a poor start to the season as the seven-time champions succeeded in finally picking up their first three points.
Here is a round-up of how Group B games panned out.
Rivers United 2-0 Wikki Tourist
Ebube Duru scored a brace as Rivers United extended their winning streak to three on Wednesday, following a 2-0 victory at the Adokiye Amiesamaka Stadium.
Duru, who had scored a freekick in a previous game for the Port Harcourt club, scored yet another to give Rivers United a lead in the first half against Wikki, before grabbing his brace in the second half, through a penalty kick.
The win, however, did have not much of an effect on Rivers United due to second-placed Lobi Stars, and third-placed Abia Warriors, also winning their matches.
Rangers 1-0 Dakkada
Enugu Rangers finally their season on the right track after a 1-0 victory at the Awka City Stadium gave them a 1-0 and their first three points of the season.
A 30th-minute goal by Olarenwaju Mohammed Hadi was all the Flying Antelopes needed against visiting Dakkada as they climbed out of the relegation zone in Group B, and into 7th.
