Nigeria-eligible striker snubbed for EURO 2024 scoops prestigious Serie A award
Despite missing out on a spot in the Netherlands squad for EURO 2024, Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee has been recognised for his outstanding season in Serie A.
The 22-year-old, who is eligible to represent Nigeria internationally, has been named the Serie A Under-23 Player of the Season after his key role in helping Bologna secure a historic Champions League qualification.
Nigeria-eligible star wins Serie A award
Zirkzee, who was born in the Netherlands, enjoyed a breakout campaign, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists as Bologna finished in a remarkable five in the Italian top-flight.
The young striker's impressive performances helped the club secure their first Champions League berth since 1964, a monumental achievement for the Bologna outfit.
Zirkzee's individual accolade comes as a bittersweet moment, however, as he was surprisingly omitted from the Netherlands' squad for the upcoming EURO 2024 tournament.
Despite his outstanding domestic exploits, the in-form forward was overlooked by Dutch manager Ronald Koeman, sparking debates around his international future.

With Nigeria also eligible to call up Zirkzee, the talented youngster may now consider switching his allegiance to the Super Eagles, who recently named former international and Ajax star Finidi George as new boss.
For now, Zirkzee can celebrate his personal triumph, having been recognized as the best young player in Serie A this season.
The award is a testament to his immense potential, and a reminder of the talent he possesses, even if he was denied a spot at EURO 2024.
