Nigeria: Bayer Leverkusen celebrate Victor Boniface's first-ever Super Eagles call-up
Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen are in a celebration mood after their striker Victor Boniface was invited to the Nigeria Super Eagles.
Boniface was one of the new faces invited by Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro ahead of the AFCONQ2023 clash against Sao Tome and Principe.
Peseiro has released his 23-man squad that will take on the Falcons and True Parrots in the final round of matches of the AFCONQ2023.
Boniface earns first Nigeria invite
It is a case of better late than never for Leverkusen’s Boniface as he finally received that overdue invitation to the national team.
The 22-year-old has been one of Nigeria’s best legs across Europe for the last two seasons but was never considered good enough for the Super Eagles.
However, just a few weeks into his adventure in the Bundesliga following a summer transfer from Union Saint-Gilloise, USG, to Leverkusen, Boniface has earned a trip to be away from club duties on an international break.
Boniface’s form for Bayer
Following his move from USG, the talented Nigerian would not have asked for a better start to life in Germany.
After just three matches, Boniface sits joint-second on the list for top scorers in the Bundesliga.
He has scored four goals which include back-to-back braces and assisted two others in what has been a blistering start to his latest adventure with the Werkself.
It is this form for Xabi Alonso’s men that has now convinced Nigeria’s manager, Peseiro, that the young forward is ready to represent his nation.
Leverkusen congratulate Boniface
Following his first-ever call-up, Bayer have now celebrated their main man.
The club took to their social media to congratulate the super forward with a simple message.
“Victor #Boniface is nominated for the Nigerian national team for the first time,” the post on their X.com account stated. “Congratulations, Vic!” it added.
Boniface will now link up with his national teammates for the clash slated for the beautiful Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo this Sunday.
