Kenneth Omeruo unhappy with coachless Super Eagles situation, pleads with NFF
Turkey-based defender Kenneth Omeruo is not happy with the state of affairs in the Nigeria Super Eagles.
Omeruo has opened up about his feelings about the vacant managerial position in the team ahead of the final game of the AFCON 2024 qualifiers.
Nigeria vs. Sao Tome
The Super Eagles will host their counterparts from Sao Tome next month in what is a dead rubber clash.
Nigeria has already booked a spot in the competition slated for next year but will play their final match in the qualifiers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
Super Eagles currently sit top of Group by two points and will be looking to end the qualifiers on a high with a comfortable win at home.
However, the team looks set to welcome Sao Tome and Principe without a coach following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract.
Omeruo reacts
Peseiro’s position as the coach remains uncertain with the NFF yet to clarify issues around his contract less than two weeks before the encounter.
One of the most senior players in the team, Omeruo, has taken it upon himself to voice his frustration with the coachless situation and the uncertainty around it.
According to a report by African Football, the Kasimpasa stopper has sent a clear message to the NFF while describing the team’s current situation as crazy.
“When it comes to talent, Nigeria has amazing players,” Omeruo noted. “Even those that are on the bench in the national team go to their club sides and bang in goals week in, week out.
“We need to have a stable technical crew. A technical crew will take us to where we are supposed to be and give us exactly what we get in Europe,” he added.
“We do not even know who will be the coach in the next game. It is crazy, and it has to be fixed.”
Meanwhile, in a related development, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has reportedly told Peseiro to take a pay cut or leave.
Per a report by Pulse Sports, Peseiro wants to stay on despite his contract expiring at the end of July but he has now been given an ultimatum to accept a pay cut or leave the team.
His time with the Super Eagles has not been a smooth sail, after nine games in the role, with four wins and five defeats, he has managed to qualify Nigeria for the African Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast next year.
