National Sevens Circuit Receives Massive Cash Injection Ahead of Season-Opening Driftwood Leg

The National Sevens Circuit has been boosted financially following a Ksh15 million sponsorship that will see a slight increase in prize money.

The National Sevens Circuit is set to be more lucrative following a cash boost for the six legs of the 2025 season.

Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa will be the season-opening leg this year, taking place on the weekend of July 26 and 27, and winners of the leg, and all the other five, will receive Ksh100,000 with the overall 2025 champions set to take home Ksh300,000.

This follows a Ksh15 million boost from betting firm SportPesa, who will be the title sponsors for the third year running.

“Your support couldn’t have come at a better time. This circuit marks the beginning of our journey to qualify both our men’s and women’s teams for HSBC Tier 1 status next year. We are more than confident than ever that Kenya will rise again on the global stage,” said Kenya Rugby Union chairperson Harriet Okatch.

Of the Ksh15 million, Ksh3 million will go directly to the six host clubs, Ksh6 million covers live stream production costs and Ksh2.3 million as the prize money for each leg as well as the overall winners.

What Will All Winners Be Earning?

Meanwhile, Ksh3 million will go into support and administrative costs while Ksh700,000 will be used to produce merchandise for the participating teams and working secretariat.

“We are proud that from the SportPesa 7s, we saw the team that went ahead to be crowned the Africa 7s Champions, booking their place into the Olympics and afterwards rose fast to return into the HSBC series,” said SportPesa official Willis Ojwang.

At every leg, winners will take home Ksh100,000, runners-ups Ksh50,000 whole third place pocket Ksh25,000 and in Division Two, Ksh50,000 will go to the winners.

In the women’s tournament, the winners will take home Ksh70,000 as runners-ups take in Ksh30,000 while the overall champions at the end of the season will be Ksh300,000 richer, second place attracts Ksh150,000 and Ksh100,000 for third place.

After Driftwoods, Prinsloo in Nakuru will take place on August 2 and 3, Christie Sevens in Nairobi from August 16-17, Embu Sevens (August 23-24), Kabeberi in Nairobi (September 6-7) before the season-finale in Kisumu for the Dala Sevens between September 13 and 14.
