Napoli's Osimhen ends Serie A season in record-breaking fashion

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen closed out the 2022/23 Serie A season by adding another milestone to his already incredible season. 

The Napoli striker scored on the season's final day to reach 26 goals for the Serie A season, ensuring he won the Capocannoniere for the 2022/23 season as the league’s top scorer.

Osimhen finished five goals ahead of his closest challenger, Inter’s Lautaro Martinez, to win the first Serie A golden boot of his career, becoming the first Napoli player to win the award since Gonzalo Higuain in 2016, and only the fourth in Partenopei history after Diego Maradona, Edison Cavani, and Higuain. 

With the 2023 Serie A golden boot, Osimhen became the first African player to win the Capocannoniere award in the history of the Italian top flight, and that was not the only milestone the Nigerian forward secured on the night. 

Osimhen converted a penalty to open the scoring for Napoli in their final game of the season, a 2-0 win over Sampdoria, as the club reached 91 points for the season. 

The Super Eagles striker's goal against Sampdoria was his 26th goal of the season and his 17th since January, making him the joint-top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues since the start of the new year. 

Only Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette and Tottenham’s Harry Kane have scored as many goals as Osimhen in 2023, making them the highest goalscorers this year. 

With Karim Benzema stepping away from Real Madrid, both Osimhen and Kane are on Real Madrid’s shortlist to replace the Frenchman and appears to be auditioning brilliantly for the role.
