Naija Super 8: Wildcards Sporting Lagos, Akwa United wild-ing, Enyimba haunted down by an ex
The Naija Super 8 preseason tournament has entered day six with the trio of Sporting Lagos, Akwa United and Katsina United putting on a show.
Sporting and Akwa United found their way into the competition as wildcards while Katsina went through the rigours of playoffs in Eket.
The trio has delivered superb displays so far in the Naija Super 8, with Sporting Lagos and Katsina on the brink of joining Akwa in the semis.
Sporting shocks Remo Stars
These two delivered a masterclass derby in what was one of the most anticipated clashes in the Naija Super 8.
Both clubs built up the hype around the first Southwest derby in a long while with funny exchanges on social media.
This happened after Sporting became the 70th team to seal a historic place in the NPFL.
With the Southwest derby back in Lagos next season, the Super 8 was a dress rehearsal and it did not disappoint.
Remo Stars took an early lead following a goalkeeping howler before Sporting bounced back to net two goals for the win, with their goalkeeper Nwoke sent off in added time.
In the end, Sporting had the bragging rights which ensured Group A remains open heading into the final day of the group stages.
Akwa United through to the semis
The Promise Keepers may have been deflated by Lobi Stars in their final game of the group stages, but they have already justified their place in the Naija Super 8.
After back-to-back wins in their opening games, Akwa had already booked a spot in the last four before the game against fellow qualifiers Lobi Stars.
United defeated former champions Rivers United and Yobe Desert Stars to book their spot.
Enyimba haunted by an ex
After Fatai Osho’s Akwa United ended the dreams of his former employers Rivers United, it was NPFL champions Enyimba’s turn to suffer the same fate.
The People’s Elephant proved to be easy meat for the newly promoted side, Katsina United, who are managed by Usman Abdullah.
Abdullah, who was however absent from the dugout in the game, lead the Elephants to the NPFL title in 2019.
