Manchester United are planning a significant squad rebuild in the upcoming transfer window, with the club targeting as many as four key signings to address multiple positions.

A top priority is reinforcing the midfield, where two new players are sought to compensate for the confirmed departure of Casemiro.

In addition to bolstering the center of the park, United are also looking to add a left-sided attacker and may enter the market for a new centre-back, with Harry Maguire's future at the club still uncertain. Discussions are ongoing regarding a contract extension for Maguire, whose current deal expires in June.

Casemiro, 34, announced in January that he will be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season. His exit leaves a significant void, with only Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte remaining as specialist central midfielders in the squad. In response, United officials have agreed on the necessity of bringing in two replacements.

Who are Man United’s Key Midfield Targets?

Carlos Baleba has been on Man United's radar since last summer.

The club has been actively scouting Premier League talent, with Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali on their shortlist. Other names of interest include Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Brighton's Carlos Baleba, and Bournemouth's Alex Scott.

Wharton, 22, is reportedly keen on a move to a Champions League club, a destination United are on track to secure as they sit third in the league. However, a move for Anderson, 23, could prove difficult, with Manchester City considered frontrunners and United potentially unwilling to match the England international's salary demands.

United previously showed interest in Baleba, 22, but his challenging season at Brighton may have cooled their pursuit. Meanwhile, Scott, also 22, has been a consistent performer for Bournemouth and earned a spot in Thomas Tuchel's most recent England squad.

Despite fans chanting "One more year, Casemiro" after his goal against Aston Villa, interim head coach Michael Carrick has indicated that the decision on the Brazilian's departure is final.

Carrick Categorical About Casemiro’s Future

"The fact that it was decided makes things a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation," Carrick stated. "The impact he has had has been terrific... Players come and go. I don’t think it’s ever really about replacing like for like. I think you can go in different directions."

"You understand what the balance of the squad will need, whether that’s on the pitch, off the pitch, leadership, positionally," he added. "Case has done some really, really good things, and certainly since I’ve been here, he’s been an absolute pleasure to work with."

At the back, the future of Harry Maguire, 33, remains a key factor. The £80 million defender has been a regular starter under Carrick, featuring in all nine of his matches in charge, and could be in line for an England recall after an 18-month absence.

Defensive Reinforcements Also on the Agenda

Lisandro Martinez has struggled with injuries since joining Manchester United

United's significant spending on central defenders since 2019 has been undermined by persistent injury problems. Lisandro Martinez, now in his fourth season, has played only 106 games and is currently sidelined again with a calf issue, having missed a total of 90 matches through various injuries. Matthijs de Ligt has also been unavailable since late November with a back problem.

The club is also assessing its options on the left flank. With the team now utilising a back four with wingers, there is a lack of natural left-sided attacking players. While Matheus Cunha has filled in recently, United could look to sign a specialist. Alternatively, if the versatile Patrick Dorgu is permanently rebranded as a winger, the club may invest in a new left-back.

Current left-back Luke Shaw, 30, is out of contract next year, and there are concerns about his ability to handle a more demanding schedule with United's likely return to European competition. Although he is the only player to have started all 30 Premier League games this season, the club is considering its long-term options in the position.
