Manchester United defender Harry Maguire reportedly refused to pay a £50,000 (Ksh8.6 million) "bribe" to make his legal troubles in Greece disappear, sources claimed, as he vows to take his fight to the country's Supreme Court.

The England international's six-year battle to clear his name following a 2020 altercation with police on the island of Mykonos culminated on Wednesday in a Greek court upholding his original conviction. Maguire was handed a 15-month suspended sentence, a decision he reportedly labelled "a shambles."

It is alleged that the £190,000 (Ksh32.8 million)-a-week star was repeatedly told that a payment of £50,000 would end the case. However, Maguire has remained steadfast in his refusal to pay, leading to a protracted legal process with four postponements between 2023 and 2025.

A source close to the player stated, "They offered to make it disappear if he paid £50,000. He would rather be found guilty than pay a bribe. No apology or payment will ever be made and Harry will clear his name. He won’t stop fighting until that happens and will go to the Supreme Court if he needs to."

What Started the Altercation?

The source added that lawyers for the undercover officers involved in the incident had consistently proposed the out-of-court settlement. "This has always been about paying money," the source continued. "He hasn’t paid a single penny and he never will. He stuck to his guns and his values and won’t budge."

The incident occurred in August 2020 while Maguire was on holiday with his wife Fern, his sister Daisy, his brother Joe, and others. A confrontation erupted after two men allegedly approached his sister, Daisy, who then appeared to lose consciousness. The group believed she may have been injected with a date-rape drug.

As they attempted to take her to a hospital, their minibus was stopped by eight plain-clothed police officers. Maguire later described the terrifying encounter, believing he was being kidnapped.

"We got on our knees and put our hands in the air and then they just started hitting us in the legs, saying my career’s over, no more football, you won’t play again," Maguire said at the time. "I feared for my life."

He explained that his attempts to flee what he perceived as a dangerous situation led to the charges of resisting arrest and assault. "No punches have been thrown," he insisted. "They are saying I hurt someone’s back because I was dragging my arm as I tried to run away because I didn’t know who these guys were."

Maguire was initially found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, and violence against public employees, receiving a suspended sentence of 21 months. His brother Joe and a friend, Christopher Sharman, were also convicted. An immediate appeal voided that conviction, pending the retrial that concluded on Wednesday.
