Ruben Amorim's Assistant Pins Blame on Man United Players Over Failed Old Trafford Stint
Adelio Candido, who served as Ruben Amorim's right-hand man at Manchester United, has revealed that the coaching staff's tactical ideas were not fully embraced by the players at Old Trafford.
Candido, who has been part of Amorim's team since their time at Casa Pia in 2018, worked as a first-team coach during their tenure in Manchester. In a recent interview with the Portuguese publication A Bola, he reflected on his time with the club.
When asked about the highs and lows of his experience, Candido explained, "Experience is always experience, whether the outcome is good or bad, we always come away with learning. In Manchester, I really liked the city and the way the fans experience football, more focused on the project than on the immediate result."
However, he added a critical assessment of the squad's response to their methods. "What I liked least was, without a doubt, feeling that our ideas weren’t fully implemented," he stated.
Carrick Succeeding Where Amorim Failed
During his reign, Amorim was known for his unwavering commitment to a 3-4-3 formation, a system that brought him significant success at Sporting Lisbon. Despite growing concerns over results and suggestions that the players were ill-suited to the formation, Amorim refused to alter his approach.
Since Amorim's departure, interim manager Michael Carrick has overseen a dramatic turnaround with the same group of players. Under Carrick, the Red Devils have secured victories against rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, climbing to third in the Premier League and putting them in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.
Candido also commented on the immense pressure that comes with managing a club like United, insisting the young coaching team handled it well.
"I think the fact that we were young helped us deal with the pressure; we always had a positive daily routine at work," he said. "With the existing pressure, it’s normal for people to get more annoyed than usual in a technical team, and that wasn’t the case for us."
Following his exit from Manchester United, Amorim remains without a club, having reportedly received a compensation package worth up to £15.9 million.
