Man United legend Paul Scholes Reveals What He Told Nemanja Matic Over His ‘Worst Goalkeeper’ Jibe Towards Andre Onana

Amid the jubilation and euphoria of Manchester United’s dramatic Europa League win over Olympique Lyon on Thursday night, legendary midfielder Paul Scholes has opened up over his conversation with Nemanja Matic.

Matic had been involved in a war of words with United goalkeeper Andre Onana before the first leg of the tie, which ended 2-2 in France, when the Cameroon international made two mistakes that led to the goals scored by the Ligue 1 side.

The spat dominated conversations before and after the first leg and even in the return match at Old Trafford on Thursday, Onana was still in the spotlight.

He, however, put in a great first half performance and protected United’s 2-0 lead at the break although he could not do much to stop Lyon from scoring twice after halftime as the game went into extra time.

Lyon looked to be cruising to the semi-final when they scored twice in extra time for a 4-2 lead and 6-4 on aggregate but United staged a dramatic comeback to win the match 5-4 and 7-6 on aggregate, for a place in the last four.

Scholes had met former United midfielder Matic, who now plays for Lyon, just before the match began and the two had a conversation regarding that war of words.

“I just told him to leave our goalkeeper alone... but no that was it,” Scholes said on TNT Sports where he was working as a pundit as quoted by Dailymail.

“He was some player Matic, he looks well. Obviously, I played against him quite a few times, me and Rio [Ferdinand] when he was at Chelsea.

“He was just saying he's nearly 37, he's got another year left. He looks fit, he looks strong, but hopefully he doesn't have a good night tonight.”

Onana had started it when he claimed Lyon are a good team but United were better and would win the quarter-final clash.

However, Matic responded by branding Onana the worst goalkeeper in United’s history while the goalkeeper fired back, claiming he has won trophies at United, something the Serbian midfielder did not achieve in five years at Old Trafford.
