Kenya and Estonia meet for the first time in their respective histories when the two sides clash at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, on Friday Rwanda, as part of the 2026 FIFA Series.

This mini-tournament, hosted in the Rwandan capital, pits four nations from different confederations together in a knockout-style friendly event, with the winner of this match progressing to the final on March 30 against either Rwanda or Grenada and the loser heading into a third-place play-off.

It is a fixture that carries more weight than your average friendly, then, with both sides looking to use this window for preparation ahead of serious competitive assignments later this year.

Kenya, ranked 112th in the world, are building towards co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania, while Estonia, ranked 128th, will begin a fresh UEFA Nations League C campaign in September against the likes of Iceland, Bulgaria and Malta.

Harambee Stars are in a period of rebuilding and reflection under head coach Benni McCarthy.

Their last competitive outing was a painful one: a 3-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in October 2025 that brought the curtain down on a World Cup qualifying campaign which yielded three wins, three draws and four defeats from 10 matches.

More damaging to confidence, their most recent fixture of any kind was an 8-0 friendly humiliation against Senegal in November 2025, a result that McCarthy has since acknowledged was partly down to experimenting with too many inexperienced players.

That said, the year was not without its highs for Kenya.

At the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Harambee Stars topped a group containing Morocco, DR Congo, Zambia and Angola before losing on penalties to Madagascar in the quarter-finals.

It was the first time Kenya had reached the last eight of that tournament in 38 years, and it gave fans genuine belief that this squad can compete when properly prepared.

Estonia, for their part, are in a transition phase of their own.

The 2026 World Cup qualifying cycle ended with the Blueshirts finishing fourth in a tough Group I that also included Norway, Italy and Moldova.

They managed just one win from their 10 qualifiers, a 3-2 victory over Moldova, while suffering some heavy defeats: 5-0 at home to Italy, 4-1 away to Norway, and 3-1 at home to Italy again in October.

Their most recent match was far more encouraging, though.

A 4-2 comeback win against Cyprus in November 2025 saw Rauno Sappinen fire a late hat-trick, turning what had been a dire evening into a rare morale-boosting result for the travelling Estonians.

That was Estonia's first win since beating Moldova five months earlier, and consecutive victories have not come since September 2022.

Head-to-Head Record

This will be the first ever meeting between Kenya and Estonia which makes the encounter all the more intriguing for supporters of both nations.

Kenya's encounters with European opposition have been exceedingly rare over the decades.

The Harambee Stars drew 0-0 with Switzerland back in December 1983 and more recently managed a 2-2 draw against Russia in October 2023, but that is about the extent of it.

Harambee Stars Team News

The biggest headline here is the absence of captain Michael Olunga.

The Al-Arabi striker, Kenya's second-highest scorer of all time with 34 goals and just one behind the national record held by William Ouma, has been left out of the squad due to a combination of unavailability and issues related to the current instability in the Middle East.

Without Olunga, Kenya lose their most reliable goal threat and their on-pitch leader.

McCarthy has also been forced to do without several other regulars: Byrne Omondi, Erick Ouma, Joseph Okumu, Collins Sichenje, Sylvester Owino, Tyler Onyango, Jonah Ayunga and Andre Gitau are all absent, while Zak Vyner and Daniel Anyembe have been confirmed as unavailable for the window.

The forward line will instead rely on the younger trio of Zech Obiero (Tranmere Rovers), Ryan Ogam (Wolfsberger AC) and Clarke Oduor (Grimsby Town), along with the returning Mohammed Bajaber, who is back in the fold after injury problems at Simba SC.

Richard Odada and Duke Abuya should anchor the midfield, with Austine Odhiambo providing creativity further forward.

McCarthy's squad selection has come under scrutiny from fans, with the inclusion of Ben Stanley Omondi (Gor Mahia) and Daniel Sakari (Kenya Police), both of whom have seen limited game time at club level, raising questions.

Final Score Prediction

Kenya 0-1 Estonia

Kenya will compete, because McCarthy's teams always do, but the goals dried up without Olunga in November and there is no reason to think that changes here while their well-documented defensive frailties point towards a narrow Blueshirts win.
