Benni McCarthy Justifies Ben Stanley Omondi Call-Up Ahead of Harambee Stars FIFA Series Campaign
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has defended his decision to call up Ben Stanley Omondi ahead of the FIFA Series in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Gor Mahia playmaker was a late addition to the squad, sparking debate among fans who questioned why other in-form players were overlooked for the opportunity.
However, the former Manchester United attacking coach has since explained the key reasons behind his decision, emphasising the value he believes Omondi brings to the team and why he deserves the chance at the international level.
Benni McCarthy Defends Decision to Call Up Ben Stanley Omondi
Benni McCarthy explained that his decision to include Ben Stanley Omondi in the squad for the FIFA Series was informed by the player’s tactical flexibility and ability to adapt to multiple attacking roles.
He noted that the youngster is not limited to a single position, highlighting his capability to operate effectively across the frontline as well as in advanced midfield areas.
Benni McCarthy pointed out that Ben Stanley Omondi’s versatility allows him to be deployed in central attacking positions, wide areas, or even in slightly withdrawn creative roles, depending on the team’s needs.
The Harambee Stars coach further emphasised that he values players who can offer fluid movement and inventive play in the final third, adding that Ben Stanley Omondi’s technical qualities and attacking intelligence make him a valuable option within the squad setup.
“I suppose picking this one, but there's method behind these selections. I can't honestly tell you what Ben Stanley's best position is, because I think Ben Stanley, if I play him at number nine, will do a very good job for me there,” Benni McCarthy said.
“But at number 10, he plays on the right midfield. And on the left, Austin, sometimes at last matches, I played him as a left converted winger coming inside, as a second number 10. So, yeah, I like my players to have that kind of creativity.”
Benni McCarthy explained that his coaching approach is centred on encouraging players to step beyond familiar roles to broaden their tactical understanding and overall development.
He said that exposing footballers to different areas of the pitch helps them build greater awareness of movement, positioning, and spatial intelligence, even when they return to their preferred roles. According to him, this kind of exposure allows players to anticipate situations better and respond more effectively during matches.
The Harambee Stars coach added that he prefers a fluid system where players are not confined to rigid positions, as this encourages adaptability and creativity in attacking situations.
Benni McCarthy noted that such an approach helps young players grow into more complete professionals, capable of performing in multiple roles rather than being restricted to a single function.
“It takes them out of their comfort zone. But when they do play in their position, they've got awareness of dropping into spaces in different positions. And sometimes you're surprised by a position, and that's what we want,” Benni McCarthy shared.
“There was no positioning. Everybody plays everywhere and sees how well you develop your footballing skills. And it benefits you when you get to this age. because you become versatile. You're not just a one-dimensional player.
“You can play in various positions. So, yeah, I like that. And I think a lot of players have to adapt to that. And so far, it's been really well because it's a very versatile team. And that's why you always see me picking this one. But there's method behind all my madness.”
Kenya has been placed in Group A of the FIFA Series alongside Estonia, Grenada and hosts Rwanda. Harambee Stars will kick off their campaign against Estonia on Friday, March 27.
